Thomas Paine A Great Leader

By Richard Moore

Thomas Paine : Collected Writings : Common Sense / The Crisis / Rights of Man / The Age of Reason / Pamphlets, Articles, and Letters (Library of America)

Thomas Paine helped spark the American Revolution by writing “Common Sense” and other well known works. He also contributed to the French Revolution and human rights. Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” was a best seller in it time and was widely spread throughout the American colonies. Thomas advocated independence from England and rallied people to stand up for their freedom.

I think Thomas Paine statement, “Lead, Follow, or get out of the way” means if you’re not going to lead or follow us then step a side. He wanted people to do something other stand in the way of the revolution. He wanted the complacent people to move to the side lines.

Based on the list of Components of Leadership I would pick communication skills. I can combine that with Paine’s advice and apply it to my life. Thomas Paine says Lead, Follow, or get out of the way”. I choose to lead, and nothing is more essential than communication skills in leadership. I once heard that leadership is the ability to influence others and get them to do what you want, because they want to. Communication skills build a bridge to influencing others. Communication has to be done with articulation and vision to encourage people to follow. I can apply this by practicing active listening and watching what I say and how I say it. Body language is also very important in communication. Continuing to learn about being a good communicator can help me to be a better leader.
