Reel That Catfish In! - Fishing Tips For Everyone
By Richard Moore
|--How to Get That Catfish to Behave When It’s Putting up a Fight--| Catfish, generally speaking, are bigger than many other types of fish. And the bigger a fish is, the more of a fight it’s going to put up after you set the hook. Some effective landing techniques include pumping your rod, keeping the fish off balance, applying pressure and knowing when to give some slack. Click here for the best fishing secrets ever published! If your catfish has paused for a moment after trying to make a run, pump your rod. But don’t pump your rod if the fish is in the middle of making a run--it just won’t work. All you have to do is lower the tip of your rod and point it toward the fish. Then lift it up vertically, very high. This pulls the fish closer. Now lower the tip of your rod and quickly reel in the excess line you just gained. Repeat these steps as necessary until the fish is close enough to land. You should stop pumping if the line is near its breaking point. Another trick is to keep the catfish off balance. But you want to do this horizontally. Many times the fish will turn sideways to you in an effort to use the current for more momentum to turn even farther from you. Many anglers advise keeping the tip of the rod elevated to pull the catfish’s head up, but that doesn’t really fight the fish--just the current. Lifting the tip of the rod actually gives the fish more strength. Rather, keep the tip of your rod horizontal, or parallel, to the fish; you need to pull the fish from the side, not from above. This makes the catfish change its angle in the current and offsets the rod’s pull. Then all of a sudden release your pressure so the fish straightens itself, facing the current--then pull sideways again. Repeat this procedure of applying and releasing pressure. Then make another sudden move: swing the tip of your rod up high vertically, then quickly back down to the other side. Keeping the catfish off balance works really great in lakes, as there is little current to help the fish resist. This technique also works well in streams when the catfish is directly upstream or downstream from you; that’s because the fish has to entirely switch sides to resist the pull of your line. You should be able to land your catfish in less than five minutes with this technique. Click here for the best fishing secrets ever published! Now, you may have just purchased a really nice rod, but you can’t be afraid to really lay on the pressure--so much pressure that your rod bends into a giant letter C shape. When you’re keeping the fish off balance as explained above, put on so much pressure that your rod bends almost all the way to the handle. Of course, this technique works better with flexible rods rather than long, stiff rods. Although you need to apply loads of pressure when keeping the catfish off balance, you have to know when to give the fish some slack. It’s when the fish jumps out of the water. When that happens, immediately point the tip of your rod at the fish and ease all rod pressure. You can even lean toward the fish to allow more slack. Fighting the fish at this juncture is just plain ineffective--and it could break your line. You’ll know it’s time to land the catfish when it lies on its side near the surface. Then all you have to do is lift the tip of your rod up toward you and land the fish. But if the catfish is still coming in nose-down, it’s still putting up a fight. Now your next biggest problem with landing a whopper catfish is finding a frying pan big enough to hold it! Click here for the best fishing secrets ever published!
