Imani’s Gift at Kwanzaa - Book Review

By Richard Jones

Imani’s Gift at Kwanzaa By Denise Burden-Patmon

Summary:

Kwanzaa has come again for Imani and her excitement is bubbling. She loves this time of year because of all the family gathers and gives gifts. She is particularly exited about tonight because she gets to light the Kwanzaa candles. Her thrill is soon met with nervousness when she realizes that Enna is attending the night’s celebration. Enna has been teasing Imani about her name. Her grandma challenges Imani to hold true to her principals and the true meaning of Kwanzaa. Imani teaches Enna about the true meaning of the holiday by setting an example. Enna learns more about Kwanzaa and realizes how important and fun it is.

Evaluation:

A multicultural evaluation of the book shows that it meets some of the guidelines, but not all. The book shows the diversity of African American celebrations, but it is a very narrow view. It’s narrow in the sense that it doesn’t show a range of representation. The book is focused on one cultural event of African American heritage. The reader can gain a lot of insight into the holiday itself. There is an avoidance of stereotyping in the book. I didn’t read or see any derogatory words or pictures that fuel stereotypes.

The perspective of the book was from Imani and how she was going to deal with a problem during a time of celebration. She had to make a choice as to whether she was going to follow what she’d been taught and allow someone else to learn something in the process. Apart from Kwanzaa the underlying lesson of the book is about sticking to what you believe in, even when times are hard and there seems to be an easier way out. Another underlying lesson comes from Enna. Enna teased Imani because she didn’t understand her culture, and specifically what her name meant. When Enna found out that Imani meant having faith and that it was a day of Kwanzaa, she respected her more.
