Catch Catfish With Ingenious Rigging

By Richard Moore

How to Outwit a Catfish with Ingenious Rigging

Regardless of whether you use stink bait, live bait, cut bait, sour bait or no bait at all, catfish are notorious for delicately thieving bait right off the hook without so much as a tug. So you need the right rigging to outwit these sneaks.

To counter this catfish quirk, you can use a special reel equipped with a bait clicker. Or, you can set the hook to detect the slightest change in pressure on the line; this is especially helpful when the line goes slack and the catfish swims with the bait. You can also try dropping the tip of the rod a few inches after a light tap; this encourages the bait to float down as if it’s not attached to anything--then set the hook on the next tap. Although treble hooks are more difficult for catfish to nab, many anglers still prefer single hooks. That’s because it’s easier to release fish if you’re practicing catch and release or get an undersized or the wrong type of fish.

You can also try tightlining. This allows you to control the distance between the bottom and the hook. Loop the hook onto the line the preferred distance from the end. Tie a weight onto the end of the line; the size depends on the current--you want a weight that will allow the rig to sit still. With split shot, peg the hook the preferred distance above the weight. You may have to experiment to ascertain the preferred distance, but starting with about 18 inches to two feet is a pretty good bet. This rig is especially useful when plants on the bottom may interfere with the catfish’s attraction to the bait. It’s important to keep the line taut so you can feel the catfish’s soft strike. This method seems to catch a lot of flatheads.

Another technique to try is the slipweight method. This allows the bait to rest on the bottom, which is particularly helpful when you’re fishing at night in shallow waters as the catfish swim closer to shore to feed. Slide a weight onto the line; the speed of the water current, of course, will determine the sinker weight you use. Next, pinch a split shot a preferred distance from the bottom of the line. Try 18 inches to two feet to begin with, but you may want to experiment. Tie the hook on the end. This allows the sinker to move along the line, making the weight indiscernible to a striking cat.

You can also try a three-way rig. Attach a three-way swivel to the end of the line, then attach a lightweight mono line about 18 inches to two feet long. At the end of the mono leader, attach a bass casting sinker. The lightweight mono leader will help to more easily free you if you get hung up. From the swivel, attach about a foot of leader with the hook. If you like, you can also double-bait by attaching another leader on the other side of the swivel.

If you’re fishing in deeper waters and want to keep your bait just off the bottom, a slip bobber with a bobber stop may be more helpful than a typical bobber rig. The slip bobber slides along the line, but stops when it hits the bobber stop. The bobber stop is attached to the line at the depth you want to fish.

Experiment with these different types of rigging, and you’ll catch those sneaking thieves before they tiptoe off with your bait!
