Abduction By Robin Cook - Teachers Review

By Richard Jones

What Science Fiction book would you read to your students and why?

I chose the book Abduction by Robin Cook. I would share this science fiction piece with young adult at the late high school level. Here are a number of reasons for choosing this book for them to read and study:

1.) “Abduction” addresses homosexual prejudice with society. In the book the Inner Earth race of people enjoy a strange form of sexual gratification, palm pressing. They press palms strictly for enjoyment and entertainment with no regard for the sex of the individual. This presents a problem when a second generation human is solicited to press palms with another male.

2.) The book gives insight into human desires that are fulfilled, but never fulfilled enough. The main characters enter into a perfect world of peace and prosperity. Everyone there is good looking and never ages, but instead lives forever. There is no violence, greed, or competition, only gratification and love. Yet even a perfect place isn’t good enough for the second generation human. The characters grow bored and long for their old lives and everything that comes with them.

3.) Class division is a theme throughout the book. In the perfect world that the main characters are taken to, there are slaves. The slaves are referred to as clones that were made to do nothing but work. The distinctions between the classes of people are significant.

4.) This book is also very entertaining. Entertainment is an important part of choosing a book for students. If it’s boring then they will read it grudgingly. The author keeps the reader turning the pages waiting to find out what will happen next.

5.) “Abduction” takes the readers into the unknown. It is a book about scientific exploration and finding something that you might not expect. The book begins with a scientific mission to drill on the ocean floor and collect the first samples of the Earths magma core. Instead main characters discover a hidden secret.

6.) In the book the main characters are a fearful of the unknown. Throughout the book the reader gets to see how this is dealt with and overcome. The main characters are taken to a place they have never been and expected to trust a strange group humans that abducted them.

7.) Like most science fiction books, this one makes them think and speculate about possibilities. The first generation humans have incredible technological advancements. Everything from time travel to bio luminescence finds its place in the storyline.

8.) The book contains a number of environmental warning and the effects if they’re not listened too. The first generation humans are worried that pollution from the surface will affect their sub surface resources. They are also concerned that the second generation will ruin the plant and destroy themselves.

9.) There is a clear warning in the book about not letting violence and anger get the best of you. The first generation of humans has banned all forms of violence within their culture, and warns about the second generations propensity toward acting out.

10.) Lastly, the book presents critical thinking about evolution and creationism. The first generation humans evolved and were driven underground. Later in the Earth’s life cycle a second generation of humans evolved and populated the Earth above ground. The critical question is would life evolve the same way twice?

My wife wrote an erotic science fiction novel. It was interesting to see a publisher reject the book because the story didn't meet their sexually graphic language standards.

Since she had created a fictional planet, she also created different terms for intimate parts.
